how does the battle pass work?

i purchased the battle pass but i have no idea how it works? do I just keep playing and it will level up? or do I have to use those purple credits to buy each tier to get to the next page?

it's really confusing me and I would like to have that mantis skin - is anyone able to explain it to me like im 5 years old? lol
