Please stop assuming nicknames when someone has a long name!!!

My name is Alexandra, but I’ve gone by Ally since birth. I absolutely love my name and nickname, but something that has always bothered me is when people assume I go by Alex!

It’s not that big of a deal and it’s easy to correct. But I’ve always found it rude when people just assume my nickname without asking or are too lazy to call me by my actual name. This happens everywhere: at the doctors, at school, when I’m picking up groceries, introducing myself to new friends… even my doorman calls me Alex every day (it’s been too long for me to correct him now, that’s on me 😂)

Whenever I meet people with long names, that’s what I call them. I would never assume Elizabeth is Eliza or Theodore is Theo. I wouldn’t even assume Christopher is Chris until I was told so.
