Rating EVERY Rex Song (pt 3) Apricot Princess
I'm going to go through each Rex album (and then singles and features after) and rank them on a scale of 1-10. Consider a 6 to be the average Rex song, not the average song in general. Essentially, I am grading these on a curve so there can be more variation in my rankings. Once I have done every album and song, I will make a full list ranking everything.
SONGS
10/10 - 7/10
- As funny as it would be, this song is NOT a 10/10 but rather a 7/10. It isn't necessarily bad (the ratings are weighed). I think having a heavily autotuned song as the start of this album was a little off-putting, but nevertheless, it's still good.
Always - 8.5/10
- It's one of the strongest songs on this album. This song is probably the most Pony-feeling song on this album. It's one of the most intimate songs on this album, which is why I gave this song an 8.5. This is one of the songs on this album that you play on repeat all night while staring at the window.
Laser Lights - 6.5/10
- In terms of underrated Rex songs, this is one of the most slept-on. I didn't really get into it until later on, but I must say it is a very pleasant song to listen to a few times. I would never specifically play this song, but rather not skip it if it came up naturally.
Face to Face - 7.5/10
- I love high-energy Rex, and this is one of the best high-energy songs that he has made. This is one of the few songs that you can play on the AUX without getting any weird looks. I like to jam out to this song on the drive home from the gym.
Stressed Out - 8/10
- Somehow, this is Rex's personal favorite song on the album (which is surprising). I didn't know until recently that this song includes a children's choir: I always just assumed that it was him with some heavy vocal mixing.
Never Had The Balls - 6/10
- Another high-energy song, but it connects with me less. I can still play this song in my car and jam out to it, but I wouldn't search for this song to play.
Pluto Projector - 10/10
- Yeah. We have reached a peak. This song has one of the most majestic instrumental sequences I have ever heard. According to my stats.fm, which has all of my Spotify stats, I have 5,168 minutes on this song, which is VERY slightly below my highest streamed song of all time. There isn't much to say about this song that hasn't already been said.
Every Way - 6.5/10
- I don't know how you top the previous song, but this song tries. This song is probably the worst on the album, but not bad. It feels very intimate like he is singing directly to me. Very heartfelt.
It Gets Better - 7/10
- Chill little song that fills the void between two peak songs. It does its job well. It's still pretty good, I like the unique-sounding instrumentals.
It's Not The Same Anymore - 10/10
- We have hit it. This is my personal favorite Rex song of all time. It is my most streamed at 5,217 minutes or 87 days on Spotify. This song is so freaking good. There are so many things to unpack with this song: the instrumentals (specifically the violin and saxophone), the lyrics (especially considering the point in his life that he was in), the length, and the guitar. This song is absolute cinema from start to end. Enough said.
VERDICT
8/10 - Look, you can't top what Apricot Princess had. I mean, that album is seemingly impossible to top. This album does put up a good fight. The production quality on this album is amazing. Another strong album for Rex here.
Remember, this grading is on a curve. 6/10 = average Rex song.
